Latest NPQML News: CTSN has been working successfully in partnership with Leadership East as licensee to deliver the NPQML nationally accredited qualification for the past four years. The NPQML is being redesigned to build upon the suite of qualifications known as the Leadership Curriculum. This reform puts schools and partnerships in the driving seat of leadership professional development (DfE, 2017).

Leadership East, a strong partnership led by 11 primary, secondary and special schools in the region, has taken the step to build on their excellent track record of delivering leadership development programmes, including the NPQs, for over 3,000 school leaders, by applying for approval from the DfE to deliver the reformed Leadership Curriculum from September 2017.

However, the government has now entered the official pre-election period in preparation for the General Election on 8 June. During this pre-election period, there are significant constraints on the nature of decisions that can be taken and public announcements that can be made. As a result, the DfE will not be in a position to announce the results of the accreditation of providers of the reformed NPQs prior to a new government being formed. We will continue to keep you updated on this matter. Whilst we await final confirmation, we are currently taking expressions of interest for the CTSN-Leadership East NPQML, so that we can hopefully organise an autumn term 2017 start for the next cohort.

Who is NPQML for?

For those who are, or are aspiring to become, a middle leader with responsibility for leading a team e.g. a key stage leader, a curriculum area leader, a pastoral services leader, a subject leader, a special educational needs co-ordinator (SENCO), or a head of department.

This includes those who are, or are aspiring to be, a middle leader with cross-school responsibilities e.g. a Specialist Leader of Education (SLE).

The National Professional Qualification for Middle Leadership (NPQML) is a qualification that provides national recognition of your leadership development and professional achievement as a middle leader.

What is included within the NPQML programme?

NPQML - Leading a team. The qualification is part of the National College for Teaching and Leadership Leadership Curriculum, which offers more flexible development opportunities to support leaders at every stage of their career. NPQML sits at level one of the Leadership Curriculum. It’s designed to support participants in becoming highly effective middle leaders with the skills, confidence and knowledge to drive successful team performance and improved classroom practice.

To achieve the qualification, participants will work on a range of middle leadership competencies. The modular programme will be delivered through a blended learning approach including:

  • a leadership 360 diagniostic review at the start and end of the programme
  • twilight face to face training for each module
  • online learning resources
  • online discussions and support
  • final assessment

What modules are available as part of the NPQML qualification?

Modules deal explicitly with leadership and management of a team or department and are designed for those with a very clear remit at middle leader level. All modules reflect the recent and significant changes in schools and national policy and provide access to a wider set of leadership resources to challenge and support participants.

Competencies developed on the NPQML at team leader level include:

  • Strategy and improvement
  • Teaching and curriculum excellence
  • Leading with impact
  • Working in partnership
  • Managing resources and risk
  • Increasing capability

The programme will be undertaken over at least two terms to enable you to show evidence of the impact of your leadership.

How long does it take?

The majority of middle leaders are likely to spend 12 months completing the programme.

How much does NPQML cost?

The cost of the programme is £850 + VAT. This will be a non-refundable charge and must be paid once your place has been confirmed by CTSN.

Dates & Venue

Dates will be confirmed once the DfE decision is known regarding the delivery of the reformed NPQs. The venue will be Comberton  Village College.
