Physics for Non-Specialists

This programme which is funded by the Institute of Physics is aimed at improving the physics pedagogical knowledge of KS3 and KS4 teachers. Both non-specialist and specialist teachers who could potentially teach physics in addition to their main subject as well teachers who want to retrain as physics teachers are most welcome.

The six 90-minute sessions will cover these topic is turn:

·     The Core Practical’s in GCSE physics

·     Energy in the new curriculum

·     Teaching Electricity

·     Forces

·     Assessing students learning in science

·     Waves and Sound

·     Collaborative lesson planning

Fourth sesion - Forces and Motion: 25th April

25 April 2019

4:00 pm - 5:30 pm

In this session we will be looking at ways of representing forces and how these lead to a clearer understanding of forces and their effect on motion. The session will start with the main misconceptions and offer teaching approaches and ways to assess students understanding of this conceptually difficult topic. It is hoped that these allow students a hands on and coherent understanding of Newton’s three laws of motion. The session is free of charge and led by Dan Crittenden, an IOP Teaching and Learning Coach based at Saffron Walden County High School.
