IoP Physics programme

Physics for Non-Specialists

This programme which is funded by the Institute of Physics is aimed at improving the physics pedagogical knowledge of KS3 and KS4 teachers. Both non-specialist and specialist teachers who could potentially teach physics in addition to their main subject as well teachers who want to retrain as physics teachers are most welcome.

The six 90-minute sessions will cover these topic is turn:

·     The Core Practical’s in GCSE physics

·     Energy in the new curriculum

·     Teaching Electricity

·     Forces

·     Assessing students learning in science

·     Waves and Sound

·     Collaborative lesson planning

Second sesion: 7th February

This session will introduce some discussion and practical teaching activities that you can use with KS3 or GCSE students to teach ideas about energy using energy stores and transfers. There will be a brief discussion of the changes in language, reasons for the changes, and approach in the new GCSEs but the bulk of the session will focus on trying the teaching and learning activities. The session is free of charge and run by Dan Crittenden, an IOP teaching and learning coach based at Saffron Walden County High School.

Coffee, tea and light refreshments will be available upon arrival.

First session: 9th January

An exploration of all of the core practicals in GCSE physics

We will discuss approaches to teaching the core practicals and there will be time for you to try all of the experiments, and discuss the main pitfalls and teaching issues that arise. There will also be an opportunity consider sourcing equipment. This forms the first of a monthly series of physics workshops led by Dan Crittenden, an IoP teaching and learning coach based at Saffron Walden County High School. This session is free of charge and is open to both non-specialist and specialist teachers of physics wanting to brush up on their knowledge of core practicals.

Tea, coffee and light refreshments will be provided upon arrival.
