Teacher Subject Specialism Training for Spanish 2020-21

What is it? DfE funded Teacher Subject Specialism Training (TSST) in Spanish for the academic year 2020-21

Who is it for? Two groups:

1) Existing teachers of other languages/subjects who want to upskill to teach Spanish and

2) native Spanish speakers with little / no UK classroom experience who want to teach Spanish in the UK.

What is the aim of the course? To support teachers in developing their Spanish knowledge, confidence and pedagogy.

The TSST course is led by Dr Rachel Hawkes and Ms Paula Vázquez-Valero at Comberton Village College.

The course consists of three elements:

1. Face-to-face sessions (Seven full day sessions across the year)
The non-native Spanish group has intensive Spanish language instruction. The native Spanish group focuses on pedagogy, as follows:
i) Use of target language
ii) Planning and preparing high-quality Spanish lessons iii) Teaching Spanish grammar
iv) Differentiation
v) Using ICT to teach Spanish
vi) Using authentic and literary resources

The whole cohort also works together in native / non-native pairs to prepare and delivery Spanish micro-teaching sequences (KS3).

2. Online twilight
In pairs or trios, participants Skype between sessions to work together . They exchange expertise (Spanish language knowledge for classroom teaching experience) to complete a Spanish teaching assignment for the next training day. In addition, there are online language tasks to complete (non-native group).

3. Observation
Participants already in post can receive a visit from one of the course tutors. This will involve a supportive (not graded) lesson observation, followed by discussion and written feedback. All participants observe Spanish teaching several times at Comberton Village College during the course.

The programme is fully funded by the DfE. Teachers who join the course are asked to confirm they can attend all seven of the course days. Schools provide cover. Lunch is provided on training days.

Feedback from previous courses Non-native participants:

“Such a valuable course because it touched on so many aspects of pedagogy – like doing a teacher
training refresher through the medium of Spanish!”

“It was very useful to develop language and pedagogy side by side. It increased my confidence in Spanish and put me in a good position to teach Spanish next year.”

“Excellent opportunities to work alongside other MFL professionals helped a lot with confidence in teaching

“It gave me the confidence to use the target language more. I use authentic material more now and having a bank of resources makes planning easier.”

“I have learnt so many ideas that I am keen to incorporate into my teaching. Thank you for inspiring me about returning to teaching!”

Native-speaker participants:

“Use of the target language session was amazing, and it fit really well with Spanish natives. The
differentiation day was really helpful to make all the pupils learn.”

“This course gave a whole knowledge of a Spanish classroom environment.”
