Cover Supervisor Programme

About the programme

This newly developed programme is aimed at members of support staff working in a Cover Supervisor role, having had no formal teacher training. The programme is also suitable for Teaching Assistants interested in working as Cover Supervisors.  The two day course introduces teaching and learning and shows delegates how they can begin to improve outcomes for students in cover lessons.  The sessions are also designed to provide participants with a 'tool kit' to assist when lessons are less positive.

Programme aims

  • Better learning outcomes in cover lessons
  • Positive behaviour management
  • Teaching and learning

Programme structure

The programme comprises two targeted full day sessions over a two or three week period.  Both sessions are delivered at Comberton Village College.  Each day includes a full lesson observation with participants having the opportunity to observe a lesson led by a fully qualified teacher and, where possible, another led by an experienced Cover Supervisor.

Key elements

  • Establishing a positive learning environment
  • Maintaining engagement
  • Lesson structure
  • Questioning techniques
  • Deconstructing reading tasks
  • Providing effective feedback
