Inspiring Children to Write - Improving Writing in Primary Schools

Cambridge Teaching Schools Network are excited to offer new and recently qualified teachers an excellent professional development opportunity. This course has been designed to support new and recently qualified teachers to develop their subject knowledge and pedagogy in the teaching of writing.

The course aims to provide delegates with practical strategies which they can use to support their children to develop their writing skills across the primary age range. Through exploring a range of teaching strategies, literacy resources and varied approaches to the teaching of writing, delegates will develop a repertoire of skills which will support their planning and teaching of writing across the curriculum.

Themes covered during the six twilight sessions will be:

  • Creating purpose and pleasure in writing
  • Developing writing through word, sentence and text level activities
  • Supporting children to develop their vocabulary
  • Teaching grammar effectively
  • How to model writing
  • Using talk, drama and roleplay to inspire writing

Through exploring the themes above, the course aims to inspire delegates to experiment with the strategies shared within their own practice. Regular opportunities will be provided for teachers to reflect upon, analyse and engage in professional dialogue about the quality of their teaching and how they can move their practice forward.

Teachers who take part in this course will attend six twilight sessions throughout the academic year (one every half term). Sessions will be delivered by English subject leaders including Clare Weatherstone  (Specialist Leader of Education) and Lisa Moule (Assistant Headteacher). The sessions will run from 4:30—6:30pm and be delivered online in the first instance. Face to face sessions at Hatton Park Primary School in Longstanton will follow when safe to do so.
