Inspiring Children to Write - Improving Writing in Primary Schools

CTSN and The United Kingdom Literacy Association are excited to offer new and recently qualified teachers this exciting professional development opportunity. This successful course has been designed as part of a research project exploring how to best support new and recently qualified teachers to develop their subject knowledge and pedagogy in the teaching of writing.

This six session course aims to provide delegates with practical strategies which they can use to support their children to develop their writing skills across the Primary age range. Through exploring a range of teaching strategies, literacy resources and varied approaches to the teaching of writing, delegates will develop a repertoire of skills which will support their planning and teaching of writing across the curriculum.

Themes covered during the six twilight sessions will be:

  • Creating purpose and pleasure in writing
  • Developing writing through word, sentence and text level activities
  • Supporting children to develop their vocabulary
  • Teaching grammar effectively
  • How to model writing
  • Using talk, drama and roleplay to inspire writing

Through exploring the themes above, the course aims to inspire delegates to experiment with the strategies shared within their own practice. Regular opportunities will be provided for teachers to reflect upon, analyse and engage in professional dialogue about the quality of their teaching and how they can move their practice forward.

Teachers who take part in this course will be required to attend six twilight sessions throughout the academic year. Timings for all sessions will be from 4:30 - 6:30 pm.

Sessions will be delivered by John-Mark Winstanley (Specialist Leader of Education of English at CTSN) at Histon & Impington Junior School.
